Purification of Acetone [67-64-1]

Purification and Drying of Acetone [67-64-1-A]            C3H6O

The acetone to be purified is heated under reflux, with small portions of potassium permanganate continuously added until a violet coloration persists. The acetone is dried by adding anhydrous potassium carbonate or anhydrous calcium sulfate. Anhydrous calcium chloride should not be used, as it causes a chemical reaction. The sediment of the drying agent is filtered off, and the clear filtrate is distilled (boiling point at 56 °C). Preparations should be made to protect the distillation apparatus from moisture.
